As the mother of a young teenaged girl (and as a woman who has been overweight her entire adult life) I am becoming more and more alert to the ways in which we are manipulated to believe certain things about female beauty.
This morning I stumbled on this. No doubt all the Americans are aware of it, but I haven’t seen it here in Australia. We do have Dove’s great print ads. The cynic in me says,”What an exceptionally clever advertising campaign!” The ever-hopeful idealist says,”Maybe it will open some eyes.”

i just saw that for the first time today too. loved it.
i try really hard to raise the boys to like real bodies. granted, they are only 2 and 4, but i think it makes a difference.

i had the same first-reaction as you - but what a cool little film! the thing that freaked me out the most was the lengthening of the neck.
now i’m off to watch america’s next top model….

Capello, you’re right - it does make a difference. I know I’ve successfully brainwashed my kids!!

Dove is donating some of the money from their self-esteem fund to Girl Scouts. It has been a great partnership, thus far! They aired one of their ads during the superbowl last year. http://www.campaignforrealbeauty.com/commercial.asp?src=InsideCampaign_commercial
It makes me cry every time I see it, so watch out!

Yes, DOVE has been on a campaign the past year and I believe they use “real” models in their ads too … Botticelli, not minimalist art.
