What a busy weekend it was. Very productive-just not on anything I should be working on! I went to some scrapbooking classes instead of sewing. Had a great time. The glue and paper were flying…
There has been some progress on Flora. This is the side panel. Very very very happy with how this has turned out. It is EXACTLY what I wanted it to be. Now I just have to make myself do the next part. I don’t know what’s going on with my quilting. I used to be obsessive about working on things and now it seems like too much effort. I still love making stuff. Maybe the medium isn’t cutting it for me anymore?? The more I make with paper, the less I want to make with cloth. And that’s quite scary because it makes me wonder if quilting is coming to an end for me. I’ve wondered this on and off for a few years now.
I need more paper, more paint, more crayons in my life again! Have any of you guys been through this? Do I even have to choose?

good lord woman - to my mind you can do it ALL.
so you take a break from one and move to another - doesn’t mean you’ll never come back, right? it’s just going to be in the closet for a while.
I know i feel fresher about my *true* love (piano) when I step away and into a new medium for a bit, maybe that’s what it is.
anyway, what you just completed is gorgeous. truly. i’m just awed. keep showing us the beautiful things…

Gorgeous work, sweetie!
You know, I spent an entire semester this year (bascially from Feb through August) without taking ONE. SINGLE. STITCH. I did all my work on (gasp!) paper. With ink.
Now I’m just startingt o feel the pull of fabric and stitch again.
It’s a cycle - each renews and refreshes the other. My best advice - and something I have just realised for myself - is don’t OVERTHINK this! Work with what your heart is teling you to do. paper? Great! Fabric - just as great!

I think the other girls are right, a break can be a good thing. I’ve been dabbling with other dance styles and actually found its improved my tap no end. And you’ll come back to your beautiful quilting with renewed vigour and creativity.
Love the panel, you are very clever.

Oh you sound like me. One trip to town will be fabric, fabric, fabric, next time it will be paper and paint and new pens!!! I think changing between 100 mediums is a must for the soul!!! Hi from another Kirsty!!!

Paper projects can be satisfying because you can achieve a result quite quickly. Fabric often requires more of your time and commitment. Why can’t they exist in harmony…? Do we really have to choose?

I know when Im full-on painting there’s little room for any other creative outlet. Its like you use up your creative juice for the day. I find it useful, when I lose the drive to get into the studio, to change tack and try something else, like drawing, sewing, taking photos etc. It invariably brings me back to wanting to paint again. Its an addiction though. Is quilting your addiction? Even addicts get sick of their vices once in a while!
I think you and I are of similar stock- so talented in so many ways! But seriously, you can be good, or at least enjoy, doing more than one kind of creative outlet.
Hey, go nuts- buy those new pens!!
Mmmmm, new pens…. : )

Kirsty, that is absolutely beautiful. I doubt that this is the end of your quilting, just that you’ve found a new medium that you want to experiment with for a while. Maybe there’s a way to bring them together?

That’s lovely…looks like clematis flowers.
I think you do both. You will decide which you enjoy most…or maybe you will like both equally. It doesn’t have to be an either or. Go and explore…get creative , have fun….that’s why your doing it I expect! Enjoy!

Kirsty, of course you don’t have to choose!! It’s not one or t’other - do whatever calls you at the time. Maybe the quilts need a break, maybe not. Go stock up on paper and crayons, anyway. Now that sounds like fun. Kindergarten for grown-ups.

This side for your quilt looks just gorgeous.
Don’t think you need to choose - but think you can choose if you want to!

i like fabric and paper. i’ll use one for a while and miss the other and the switching goes back and forth and back and forth.

Surely you don’t have to choose one exclusively over another? This is just a good reason to feed the muse with a trip to the art supply store…
The panel is fabulous. How are the flowers done, are they applique too?

merge! paint to fabric. fabric to paper. mix. collage. mess it up! A bit of both mediums blended into one perhaps? I know I will use anything with my quilts and painting or drawing on the fabric is a part of it all. I feel that it is all part of growing and moving onward with our art. You can always do either. no need to choose one over the other permanently ever.

Everyone has already said it. Listen to your heart and go where it tells you. In my experience the creative path often circles back to whence it began. If it doesn’t, oh well. There are so many things worth exploring in this life. You don’t have to cut yourself off from any of them. The old and the new, they both have merit.
The panel is truly lovely. I hope you find the desire to finish it but even if you don’t it’s clear simply looking at what you’ve made here that you’ll make plenty more that’s just as lovely regardless of what medium you choose.
