Blissed Out

I have a new category/set in my flickr photos. It’s called Blissed Out and it’s where I’m going to put all the photos I take that represent things that give me joy and happy and peace. Today it’s my tidy bookshelves.

ps: if you’re the pervy kind who has to study the titles closely, remember that there are two of us contributing to these shelves and we each have very different taste and we each have very eclectic taste. The Dan Brown/Robert Ludlum/Ben Elton stuff is NOT mine (not that I’m a snob or anything).

Just thought I’d explain this a little more – it’s not an original idea (wish I was that smart). It’s an idea from a guy called Chris Cobb who did this to the entire content of the Adobe Bookshop in San Francisco in 2004. The installation was called There Is Nothing Wrong in This Whole Wide World and people have been copying him ever since. I’ve had an obsession with colour-ordering stuff since I was a kid, but I’d never considered doing it to my books! I’m going to do the rest of them eventually. I thought Peter would hate it (being an engineer and all) but he just laughed!

  1. Arranged by COLOUR? OMG Woman!

  2. The laundry king and I have separate sets of shelves. All the sci-fi fantasy stuff is on one side; on the other is New Zealand literature, classics and travel books. No prizes for guessing which side is mine!

  3. I’m pretty sure you just called me pervy.

  4. I love those authors! It’s sometimes like – “have you finished reading that yet? Can I start in the meantime?” I also like Philippa Gregory and Joanne Harris – a bit of history, romance and something for the sweet tooth!

  5. I like the color coordinating thing.

  6. Hmmm…colour co-ordinated? I have to stop myself doing things like that! I have a very eclectic taste in books so I wouldn’t dare judge you by your bookshelves.

  7. LOVE!

I color coded my bookshelves last winter during day 4 of a 5 day snowstorm.

  8. I love the color flow of your bookshelves… So very appealing and somehow soothing. It looks very magazine-photo-shoot ready! And hey, I think it’s great you’ve got Dan Brown and Robert Ludlum on there. Variety is a good thing.

  9. It truly looks fabulous! Mine are in size order and it doesn’t look nearly as pretty! I have eclectic taste so people are often surprised by the various contents of my shelves – and it’s just me! All mine!

    Thanks for sharing the link!!

  10. Oh it is indeed blissful, and thank you for the links to the other pictures. I had a couple of hundred or so watercolour pencils in my classroom and my idea of bliss was sorting them out by their colour shades, and my embroidery threads too. I love the slow sweep of change!!!

  11. Would it be equally cool if I sorted my clutter by color? Truly, though, as a color geek I think this is really cool.

P.S. I love the new blog look.

  12. They look so cute all colour co-ordinated up there!! I love the look but am afraid to say that I am just not that organised! My book shelves would make you hang your head in shame =(

  13. Not for a second did I think they were yours

  14. I love when everything is colour co-ordinated. I can just sit and watch colours, from fabrics, yarns, threads, paints, pencils, books, everything actually. Love shops that have clothes hanging in order of colour, and shoes, bags.

  15. Oh wow, organized by color. Just how I like it. It’s like the visual representation of Reading Rainbow…ok, forget I said that…

  16. come to me , my bookshelves are still an uncoordinated colourful mess……….. you are right, yours is peaceful for the eye, DH and I have a different taste in magazines not so much in books , I am faster in reading, so the one who starts with a new one or I will never read it, my patience is not so well grown.

  17. I love the books grouped by colors… so appealing!

PS I love reading Dan Brown and Robert Ludlum. Tons of research and good story.

  18. I love that but I’d never be able to find anything. But the bookshop is so pretty! And now I must go and do some marking – lots of it. Sigh.

  19. I think I must have been a librarian in a previous life, as while I love the look of the colour arrangement, I started hyperventilating at the thought of mixing all my authors around. And to throw in non-fiction as well…oh my… I think I need a lie down just to recover from that concept. :)

  20. I wouldn’t have thought to read the titles, I was too gobsmacked about the colour coding!

  21. That sounds like a fabulous Flickr set. I’ll check it out :)

  22. Holy hell, they’re colour coded!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Clearly I am as gobsmacked as everyone else).

I thought I was insane by organising my books in height order on the bookshelf.

  23. SNOB !!

    ( tee hee – i’m one too – there’s even books of MINE I wont admit to/pretend someone else read them/liked them …. )

Beautiful piccy – pretty colours all in a row …

  24. My whole closet is done in color order…I’ve been doing stuff like that my whole life. Not books though-they are all arranged by height…left to right: tallest to shortest. But now you have me thinking!

And you’ve got one of those “engineer husbands” too, huh? lol!

  25. It looks great! I did this to the kids books one day when I was sorting out their stuff (historical moment..). My closet is in colour order too… And my fabrics of course ;)

  26. OCD!

    Yeah, you heard me…OCD.

    Frickin’ OCD.

  27. We once had a cleaning lady who organised our books in height order. My husband, an alphabetical man, demanded that she be sacked immediately. This was tricky because of employment legislation. Sadly, we have not had a cleaning lady since. Too risky for our tiny library.

  28. I cant believe I havent thought of that before!!! Coolest idea EVA!!

  29. I love the color organization. I remember obsessing about that crayon that just didn’t quite fit perfectly into the boxed rainbow.

  30. None of my books are as colourful as yours…boo hoo. But I so would colour co-ordinate them if they were.

  31. Sorry, anonymous is me, that was just an accident, or rather incompetence on my part. Your shelves are a joy to the eye.
